Peachy goodness at Farmers Markets!

With the calendar turning to August this week, I know that there are only about 6 weeks left in our farmers’ market season.   So its time to get out there and enjoy the best pickings of the year.  Fresh produce never tasted so good!

Here in Bend, Oregon, there are 4 local markets each week (Wednesday, Friday and two on Saturday).  Each market has its own local flavor – influenced by the location and the regular shoppers.  Many stands offer tasty free samples, and there’s even music which could encourage some of the crowd to dance….

While produce is often the first thing that comes to mind when you think about farmer’s markets, you can also usually find fresh flowers, baked goods, canned jellies and jams, honey, mushrooms, nuts and even locally raised beef or pork.  Fresh makes the difference!  Not only are the offerings more flavorful because they have been picked at ripeness (and not days prior), but they are usually organic, as well.  You’ll help support the local economy when you buy at farmers’ markets.

Farmers’ markets are truly community events!  Moms push babies in strollers, vendors chat with the customers and no matter the weather, it seems that everyone has a sunny smile on their face.   Quite simply, its a great, green activity to do with the entire family!

Speaking of peachy goodness…. did you know that peaches are in season right now?  From June through September, you can purchase the juiciest, tastiest peaches – loaded with fiber, Vitamin C, potassium and beta-carotene.

Choose firm fruit without any bruises, and no green in the flesh.  If the fruit is very firm, allow it to ripen a few days at room temperature.  When they smell sweet and give slightly to the touch, your peaches are ready to enjoy!  Sliced with fresh cream, or perhaps baked into a cobbler….

Summer sure tastes delicious.  Enjoy it while you can!
