Time to “Think” About Electric Cars

The Think Electric Car

All-electric and plug-in electric hybrid cars are crossing the threshold from far-fetched and futuristic, to a realistic and practical alternative to fuel-based vehicles.

Quite literally, its time to think about electric cars!

Norway-based company, “Think” has recently announced that it will manufacture its highway-capable electric vehicle (EV) at a facility in Elkhart, Indiana this year, and will start selling the cars to U.S. consumers by the end of 2010.

U.S. consumers have indicated they are eager for electric cars to hit the market.  A recent AAA poll found that of all vehicle options, drivers most want cars with lower greenhouse gas emissions.

The Think City should be perfect for most commuters.  The two-seater car has a range of 100 miles until it needs to be recharged, and can travel up to 60 mph (who drives faster than that in traffic?)  Under the hood, you’ll find lithium ion batteries supplied by Indiana-based EnerDel.  Coincidence that the Think City also will be manufactured in Indiana?

Plus, its pretty darned cute, if you ask me!

Think Global began distributing its “City” car to European customers last month, after a 12-month hiatus due to funding issues and a corporate restructuring.  Not surprisingly, it is eager to bring the EV model to the U.S.

Although America has been slower to construct necessary infrastructure for wide-spread use of electric cars, 2010 is signaling a new change.  Regions across the continent are taking note of investments made by London, and in Israel, to install numerous charging stations for residents’ ease of use.

Curious to know what the Think City will cost?  Well, we don’t know for sure yet.  However, experts generally state that the cost per mile of electric cars, which charge their batteries from a home outlet, will be cheaper than gasoline cars.

Now that is something to “Think” about!
