Once again, its time to re-think any preconceptions of electric cars as geeky or gutless.  A new hybrid electric car from Volkswagen will hit showrooms next year, which shares its electric drive system with Porsche’s Cayenne S Hybrid.

VW is taking its popular SUV, the Touareg, and creating a gasoline-electric hybrid sport utility model for 2011.  Consumers will have three Touareg options next year:  the 2011 Touareg Hybrid, the 2011 diesel-powered Touareg TDI, and the “regular” gasoline-powered Touareg FSI.  Perhaps not surprisingly, VW’s plug-in electric hybrid vehicle will boast the highest in-city mileage.

The hybrid electric car will be just like the other versions of the VW Touareg, except when it comes to its lower CO2 emissions and the price at the pump.  Consider these features:

  • 7,700-pound towing capacity
  • full-time four-wheel drive
  • leather seats
  • heated steering wheel and seats
  • navigation system with dashboard display
  • 3-liter, supercharged, direct-injected V6: rated at 330 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque
  • 34 kilowatt (47 hp) electric motor powered by a nickel-metal hybrid battery pack (recharged from engine power and regenerative braking)
  • eight-speed automatic transmission with two “eco” modes for fuel-efficient driving
  • auto-off engine when not needed

This cool hybrid electric car will set you back some green.  The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the Touareg Hybrid is $61,385 (a heady $16,000 more than the gasoline-only 2011 Touareg).  Can you expect to make up the difference in gasoline savings?  Perhaps if you drive in-city alone.  At low-speeds over short distances, the plug-in electric hybrid vehicle will run on 100% electric power.  In addition, the car will automatically shut off the engine at traffic lights to save fuel.  VW expects the fuel mileage rating to be 21/25 mpg – better than for its gasoline model, but probably still some room for improvement at that price.

The hybrid electric Touareg is the first of its kind from VW, but not the last.  Volkswagen is planning to add a hybrid Jetta to its line in 2012.
