The Nation's First Electric Car-Friendly Scenic Byway

The first of its kind in the nation, an electric car-friendly Scenic Byway will be created in Washington State.  Its no accident that the Evergreen State will be the site of a green highway.  Infrastructure for electric vehicles has been best established along the West Coast of the United States, laying the groundwork for a smooth transition for owners of new electric cars.

The Stevens Pass Greenway, also known as U.S. Highway 2, will be outfitted with two or three electric vehicle (EV) fast charging stations by the Department of Commerce and the Washington State Department of Transportation. It will soon become the nation’s first electrified National Scenic Byway.  Construction of the charging stations along Highway 2 will be partially funded through the State Energy Program and is slated to be complete by the end of 2011.

With consumers flocking to electric cars like the Nissan LEAF (and the 2012 Ford Focus to be released early next year) and plug-in electric hybrids like the Chevy Volt, drivers in Washington State can put aside “range anxiety.”  Fast-charging stations will be established along “electric highways” on I-5 and I-90, which will also connect to the electric-car friendly Scenic Byway in North Central Washington.

Fast charging EV stations to be installed along highways in Washington State

The Level II recharging stations will be able to recharge an EV or PEHV from zero to 80% in just 20 minutes.  Before you know it, you’ll be enjoying the beautiful tourist attractions along Highway 2, including Stevens Pass Ski Area, the charming Bavarian town of Leavenworth, and the apple capital of the state, Wenatchee without having to stop at a gas station.  In fact, each of these locations will also have their own recharging stations, in addition to the fast-charging stations installed by the state along Highway 2.  Additional sites are expected to be announced by resort owners and public entities along the route from Leavenworth to Chelan.

Washington State Tourism is planning to tout the eco-tourism opportunities that the electric car-friendly Scenic Byway will create.  Fast charging stations located along the Stevens Pass Greenway may lead to the perfect marriage of green travel and the green landscape!

Within the year, you’ll be able to wind your way through the beautiful Evergreen State – breathing fresh air, enjoying stunning scenery, and with a total vacation from the gas pump, too!
